Riverlands BNG

Riverlands Farm has biodiversity credits available to purchase.  We are based in between  Worcester and Wychaven District Councils

Riverlands is a farm of approximately 100 acres, located on the banks of the River Teme, in the village of Leigh, Worcestershire. Formally an arable farm, boasting little ecological value, under new ownership it has begun to be transformed, with the vision of the whole site becoming a haven for habitats and species of key local significance. The location, on the floodplain of one of the UK’s largest rivers, means that any ecological enhancements here would have much further reaching benefits than the confines of the site itself. The site has been lodged as part of the Worcestershire LNRS (local nature recovery strategy). Working alongside Severn Rivers Ecology the site has been optimised to include a range of key habitats to maximise the biodiversity potential.

Appraised Land

Key

A full appraisal of the site has been made by Severn Rivers Trust, who are accredited BNG ecology assessors, to create BNG credits as part of a mosaic of new habitats that will replace the incumbent arable land. The credits available are;

Hedgerow units: 1.55

Ditch units: 1.97

Other neutral grassland: 156.19

Floodplain wetland mosaic: 1.49

Ponds (non-priority habitat): 11.85

Mixed scrub: 9.55

Riverlands Farm is conveniently located between Malvern Hills and Wychavon districts so the proximity of each unit will apply over both districts.

Worcestershire LNRS

Worcestershire Council have added the above appraised land to the LNRS map which will be published early in 2025.

Local Nature Recovery Strategies (LNRS) are statutory documents that will establish local priorities for nature’s recovery and map where those gain for nature can best be delivered. Riverlands will be mapped within the Worcestershire LNRS as an ‘Area that could become of particular importance for biodiversity’, reflecting its potential to deliver measures to create and enhance habitat alongside the River Teme Site of Special Scientific Interest . Once the LNRS is published in 2025, land mapped within the strategy can have the strategic significance weighting applied in relation to Biodiversity Net Gain.

Importance of Increasing UK Biodiversity

We understand that nature underpins our society and economy, providing us with clean air, water, soil and carbon storage. Access to nature is vital for our physical and mental wellbeing.

Despite this, our natural environment faces unprecedented pressures: since the 1970s around half of our biodiversity has been lost, with 1 in 6 species regularly monitored across Great Britain now facing extinction.

The nation’s State of Nature Report 2023 shows that, in the UK:

  • numbers of farmland birds have declined by 58% on average

  • pollinating insect species, including bees, hoverflies, and moths, have declined in distribution by an average of 18%

  • just 7% of land in England is protected for wildlife
